Mercedes-Benz is taking visitors to the Retro Classics show (March 13-16, 2014) in Stuttgart, Germany, on a walk through its proud 118-year history of commercial vehicles by displaying 12 classic delivery trucks alongside four new Mercedes-Benz models.
Coinciding with the release of the new Mercedes-Benz Atego, the manufacturer’s display in Stuttgart falls under the broad banner of ‘Distribution transport, then and now’, with the hand-picked selection of classic trucks – sourced from a number of private collectors and Mercedes-Benz museums – showcasing over a century of progression in the sector.
Among the highlights is a race car transporter (in blue) based on the Lo 2750 of 1936 and the very first truck from the firm’s Wörth commercial vehicle plant, the LP 608 of 1965. This forward-control truck with Pullman cab was a regular sight on European roads, and elsewhere, up until the 1980s.
The advertisement also shown depicts the Mercedes-Benz 170 V delivery van – the model that kicked off the firm’s post-war production in May 1946. It was pressed into many roles and was available as a convertible, a pickup, and even an ambulance.
In stark contrast to these classics at Stuttgart are four new Mercedes-Benz models: an Atego; a super-heavy-duty SLT Arocs 4163 8x4 (with a GCM of up to 250 tonnes); an Arocs all-wheel-drive tipper; and an Actros.
The display is sure to bring a smile to showgoers at Retro Classics, which last year attracted 77,000 visitors and has cemented its reputation as one of the biggest classic shows of its type in Europe.
