After thrilling crowds in Brisbane the week before, the Monster Jam monster truck tour struck Melbourne on Saturday, October 4. The 1500hp mega machines put on two memorable shows at the Victorian capital's AAMI Stadium, the evening event held before a capacity crowd of around 22,000.
Bursting into the arena amid a pyrotechnics spectacular, monster trucks bearing names such as Grave Digger, Madusa, Monster Mutt Rottweiler and El Toro Loco soon got to work leaping off jumps, crushing cars and performing stunts a 4500kg vehicle really has no right to pull off.
The show format put the trucks through their paces in two competitions, a series of head-to-head races and a freestyle event, the latter seeing the craziest antics rewarded with the most points. While the racing was taken out by Australia's Damon Bradshaw in the Monster Energy truck, it was Metal Mulisha driver Todd le Duc on top in freestyle, ahead of Marc McDonald in the Big Bash League machine and Lupe Soza in El Toro Loco.
The biggest cheers went to Metal Mulisha and El Toro Loco upon each successfully landing a backflip – no mean feat in trucks of this size and weight – but the casualties were many, with Grave Digger, Madusa, Max-D, and Monster Mutt Rottweiler sidelined with damage and an array of mechanical issues.
When the monster trucks weren't soaring 10 metres above the course or tearing up the dirt, crowds enjoyed a number of 'Australia versus USA' quad-bike races and a gravity-defying freestyle motocross display.
The Monster Jam tour is now halfway through its Australian schedule, with shows still be run in Adelaide (Saturday, October 11) and Sydney (Saturday, October 18).
trucksales.com.au still has a double-pass to give away for each of these rounds but Adelaide residents in particular will have to move smartly – the winner will be drawn at 5.00pm on Monday, October 6.
