Melbourne’s Montague Street Bridge, or Monty as it’s affectionately known, took another beating this week when a pantech driver failed to observe the gantry or the 26 signs on the approach to the 3.0 metre bridge.
According the bridge’s website, which has been active since the horrific bus crash in February 2016 which injured up to 11 people, there have been 26 reported incidents of trucks hitting the bridge since that date.
All told, the bridge has been hit over 100 times since the oldest recorded (or remembered) incident in 1929.
In April 2016, two trucks hit the bridge in one day leaving a skip in the middle of the road and pantech wedged under the bridge at the same time – surely a record!
Over the years, there have been many calls to raise the bridge or lower the road to increase the clearance, but with the road prone to flooding and a train line overhead, both options have been dismissed so far.
All we can say is that if you’re in Melbourne in a truck, Montague Street is a good one to avoid.
