Murrays, a leading Australian coach charter operation with depots in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and on the Gold Coast, says it’s now using fully automatic Allison transmissions in 124 vehicles across its 180-strong fleet.
The firm’s 7.6m Higer small deluxe coaches, powered by Cummins ISF engines, run Allison’s 1000 Series transmissions, while its bigger BCI 12m and 14.5m coaches – powered by Cummins ISL and ISM engines – run Allison’s T390R or T450R transmissions.
Justin Cannon, National Fleet Manager for Murrays, says the Allison transmissions enhance the vehicles’ safety.
“Allison automatics reduce driver fatigue because drivers don’t have to constantly change gears,” he says.
“This makes it safer and smoother, which in turn enhances the passenger experience.”
Allison says its Load Based Shift Scheduling (LBSS) and hydraulic retarders minimise fuel and maintenance costs.
The LBSS feature automatically alternates between economy and performance modes depending on the payload and the grade of the road, effectively optimising the gear-shifting strategy. The hydraulic retarders, meanwhile, are said to reduce wear and tear on a vehicle’s brakes.
Cannon says both features are paying dividends.
“Allison’s LBSS feature has reduced our fuel consumption and the integrated retarder in the Allison transmissions we use in the larger BCI coaches significantly reduces the rate of wear on the brakes,” he said.
“Lower fuel consumption is one important aspect, but it is also the shift quality and other benefits, such as lower brake wear and the efficiencies delivered by LBSS, that make Allison the complete package.”
