New Mazda BT-50 model range announced

BT-50 ute now 20 per cent more fuel efficient as 4x4 and 4x2 dual-cab ute model range details emerge ahead of October reveal

The new Madza BT-50 dual-cab ute model range will be cheaper to run, safer and offer more technology as Mazda confirms spec levels and equipment for the new ute.

Three model-grades on offer, the entry-level XT, mid-sped XTR and fully-equipped GT.

Although pricing hasn’t been announced yet, Mazda will offer a choice of 4x4 or 4x2 drivelines in cab-chassis or conventional ute body styles.

Only the dual-cab will be offered when the BT-50 launches in October and Mazda has promised more body styles such as single cab will be introduced “post-launch”.

Equipment levels are impressive, with all models fitted as standard with alloy wheels, LED headlamps, power-adjustable mirrors, floor carpets, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go traffic function, automatic high-beam headlights, lane keep assist, blind spot monitor and eight airbags.

In terms of the cabin, buyers will get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with cabled Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay, plus a reversing camera, USB ports for front and rear seats and plenty more besides.

XTR models adds bigger alloy wheels, LED fog lights and a bigger 9-inch touchscreen, while the top-spec Mazda BT-50 GT comes with brown leather seats that are power-adjustable and heated.

See below for the equipment and specification guide for the three models, however, it should be noted that utes equipped with the six-speed manual miss out on advanced driver tech in the form of active lane keep assistance and adaptive cruise control.

Along with the manual gearbox, a six-speed automatic transmission will be offered and in terms of mechanical specification, the Mazda BT-50 is identical to the Isuzu D-MAX ute, which means all models are powered by the same 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine (140kW/450Nm).

While power and torque levels are down slightly compared to the previous BT-50, which used the Ford Range ute’s bigger 3.2-litre five-cylinder engine, towing capacity is still 3500kg and tray payload is 1000kg-plus.

Mazda has confirmed that fuel economy has been reduced by a whopping 20 per cent, thanks to the more modern engine and a 50kg vehicle weight reduction, with fuel consumption for 4x2 dual-cab pick-up models with the six-speed auto claimed at 7.7L/100km.

BT-50 4x4 models with six-speed manual also use fuel at a rate of 7.7L/100km while 4x4 pick-up and 4x2 cab chassis automatic utes slurp down fuel at 8.0L/100km, which compares to the previous ute’s 10L/100km.

Stay tuned for Mazda BT-50 pricing in the next couple of weeks, but expect increases over the current pricing, which starts at around $40,000 for the entry-level BT-50 XT 4×2 manual cab-chassis and tops out at $63,250 for the flagship Boss BT-50 4×4 auto.

With the new Isuzu D-MAX, facelifted Toyota HiLux and impending Nissan Navara hitting the new car market before year’s end, the dual-cab ute segment is about to get red hot.
