Continental's automotive electronics brand VDO says its ProViu camera system gives operators of heavy vehicles a full 360-degree view of their surroundings.
The system essentially sees four specialised 187-degree fisheye lenses monitoring the vehicle's environment in real time, giving the driver an unprecedented view of other vehicles, pedestrians, kerbs, buildings and more.
Originally designed as an OEM system, VDO's ProViu can now be retrofitted to a wide range of trucks, buses, and agricultural vehicles.
The cameras capture separate images that are then adjusted for perspective and light balance, before the system combines them to create the one single bird's-eye view.
VDO says the system is ideal for drivers negotiating congested city streets, when parking, or for threading a course through an obstacle-strewn building site, while the view can be tailored to meet any individual driver's needs.
According to VDO Commercial Vehicle and Aftermarket Manager, Phil Crosbie, the system has the potential to save lives, prevent costly collisions, and maximise vehicle up time.
"In public transit operations, blind spots can become a serious and life-threatening problem; usually it's a case of the bigger the vehicle the bigger the hidden area, with blind spots hiding pedestrians, cyclists or even entire cars," he said.
The VDO ProViu package includes four cameras, software and an Electronic Control Unit. It's available through VDO stockists across Australia and New Zealand.
