New Volvo FH16 unveiled

Swedish truck brand's flagship model now even safer, smarter and more comfortable

Volvo Trucks has pulled the covers off the latest iteration of its flagship model, the FH16.

Unveiled in Sweden recently, the new Volvo FH16 features a new 'driver-centric working environment', plus refreshed styling and the addition of a raft of new high-tech features, all aimed at making the truck safer and even easier to drive than ever before.

Gobally, the Volvo FH16 will continue with a range of engine options in a number of emissions standards, up to Euro 6.

Externally, refreshed styling sees repositioned V-shaped LED headlights improve the truck's aerodynamics and deliver a more confident stance, while the adaptive high beam automatically disables selected segments of the LED high beam lighting when the truck approaches oncoming traffic or another vehicle from behind.

"Bolder, more sophisticated and confident, the exterior of the Volvo FH16 reflects the fact that this truck is more connected and smarter than ever before," says Ismail Ovacik, Chief Designer Exterior for Volvo Trucks.

New driver environment

Inside the truck, an updated driver environment sees new accent colours and trims complemented by an upgraded dashboard with new storage spaces and a 12-inch digital instrument display with a choice of any of four screen views. This can be augmented with a 9-inch infotainment display, accessed via integrated steering wheel buttons, voice commands, or directly via the touchscreen interface.

The Volvo FH16 now comes standard with EBS (Electronic Brake System), while further safety updates come in the form of Descent Control (that allows a driver to set the maximum speed when travelling downhill) and Adaptive Cruise Control that now works down to a standstill.

A road sign recognition system now displays a variety of signage in the instrument display while options run to a passenger-side auxiliary camera view and Volvo Dynamic Steering, which adds further features like Lane Keeping Assist and Stability Assist.

The new Volvo FH16 will be available in Low Sleeper, Sleeper, Globetrotter, Globetrotter XL and Globetrotter XXL cab formats, plus engine ratings up to 750hp and 3550Nm with Volvo's I-Shift automated manual transmission.

While local specifications are yet to be announced, Volvo Group Australia has said it will be taking orders for the new Volvo FH16 from the final quarter of 2020, with production at its Wacol facility in Brisbane to commence from the first quarter of 2021.

No compromise

"The Volvo FH16 is a genuine premium product that can handle all the most demanding applications and, at the same time, give customers and drivers the best of everything," says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.

"With the new generation we have created a package that makes no compromises between power and fuel efficiency, comfort and style.

"The Volvo FH16 delivers everything you expect from a Volvo truck, and more, thereby solidifying our position as the brand for heavy, demanding long-haul operations."
