Volvo Trucks says its new Volvo FM "is designed to be the ultimate workplace on wheels in all segment", with the new model – unveiled recently in Sweden alongside new Volvo FH16, FH and FMX models – boasting a redesigned cab, refreshed styling, and a host of new technology.
According to Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, the new Volvo FM exemplifies the brand's philosophy of attracting and retaining quality drivers.
"Drivers are one of the most important assets in the transport industry," he says.
"With the new Volvo FM we are introducing a versatile working tool that is also a haven of comfort, allowing our customers to attract and retain the best drivers that will keep their operations moving successfully."
Vision has been enhanced for FM drivers thanks to a lowered door line, new rear view mirrors and a passenger corner camera, while raising the cab's A pillars has added up to one extra cubic metre of space and more light.
Like the other new Volvo models, the new Volvo FM sports a new dashboard with 12-inch digital instrument display and 9-inch side infotainment display, placing a wealth of information at the driver's fingertips.
Meanwhile a new steering neck tilt option offers a more ergonomic driving position.
The new sleeper cab has been upgraded with a raised bed and improved storage, with a large compartment under the bed and an upper rear storage unit with LED panels in the compartment dividers.
Moving around the cabin is made easier thanks to a new slimmer, ergonomically designed I-Shift gear selector, while the cab's insulation has been improved to keep out the cold, heat and noise.
Exterior styling has also come in for a revision, with the new Volvo FM now sporting a more modern, purposeful look thanks to its repositioned LED headlights, single sleek side character lines, and new upper front grille.
Safety advances span the inclusion of EBS (Electronic Braking System) as standard, along with a new Descent Control feature, Adaptive Cruise Control that operates down to a standstill, and automatic road sign recognition.
Volvo says the new Volvo FM can be tailored to deliver higher productivity and fuel savings across a wide range of applications, while improvements to the steering angles of tag and pusher axles afford greater maneuverability.
While local specifications are yet to be announced, the new Volvo FM can be produced with an array of engine and emissions options, and in a range of cabs spanning day, sleeper and crew formats.
Volvo Group Australia has announced it will begin taking orders for the new Volvo FM from the last quarter of 2020, with production to commence in the first quarter of 2021.
