To improve the accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of route planning for the heavy vehicle industry and enhance the management of heavy vehicle networks for road managers, the NHVR is developing a new and improved route planner through the National Spatial Program.
The new planner will for the first time provide industry with the ability to successfully determine a route that will automatically take into consideration the heavy vehicle networks specific to the B-double, OSOM and road trains based in Victoria.
Over time, the NHVR said it will incrementally add new networks across all participating states, helping reduce the volume of access applications and decreasing permit turnaround times.

To support the delivery of the new route planner, the NHVR is also developing the Way2Go application, which will allow road managers to use innovative functionality and a rich data set to update ownership of local council and state authority roads, and expedite the process for updating heavy vehicle networks.
The data collected in the Way2Go application will feed into the new route planner, creating a nationally consistent mapping platform and delivering significant productivity, safety and efficiency improvements for the industry.
The new route planner and Way2Go application will be tested with a small group of industry participants and road managers in Victoria during a pilot phase beginning on 1 November, and will be rolled out incrementally over the next six months.
