The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has added a series of performance heat maps to its website, with colour coding giving an at-a-glance snapshot of the volume of permit requests and the time taken to respond to those requests across local jurisdictions.
The NHVR says the maps allow bottlenecks to be clearly seen, giving the regulator direction on where improvements to the road network need to be made.
The NHVR's Director of Access, Peter Caprioli, said the tool would ultimately help streamline the network.
"Jurisdictions and local government associations will be able to use these maps to identify possible infrastructure requirements for their local area," he said.
"We are working collaboratively with all Road Managers to better manage impacted areas, boosting access and the flow of freight on our national roads.
"The NHVR has successfully collated and compared 12 months of data to illustrate and enhance our understanding of where the blockages are positioned. This will help with addressing the concerned areas across the country.
"We understand that these obstructed areas are mainly due to road pavement conditions and maintenance infrastructure issues."
