Nominations are now open for the Australian Trucking Association’s 2014 National Trucking Industry Awards, with the winners to be announced at a gala ceremony at the 2014 Trucking Australia conference at Hamilton Island on Saturday, June 7.
The awards recognise individuals and businesses that have made great strides in improving their workplace and the industry, with the accolades to be handed down in a number of categories.
The ATA is now taking nominations for the following awards: Outstanding Contribution to the Australian Trucking Industry; National Trucking Industry Woman of the Year; National Professional Driver of the Year; and the inaugural National Training Excellence award.
The National Training Excellence award is a new title for 2014, and is sponsored by the Driver Education Centre of Australia (DECA).
The Director of DECA, Brendan Tenison-Woods, said the award would encourage Australian truck operators to ensure their drivers were adequately equipped to handle the challenges of life on the road.
“Industry-relevant, high-quality training is essential to sustainable commercial success,” he said.
“A suite of industry awards isn’t complete if it does not recognise the role of training. Rollovers are too common, often tragic and always costly. Both the causes and the solutions relate to training, attitude and the operating environment, such as road conditions, equipment and technology.”
Other awards to be presented at Hamilton Island – and which don’t require nomination – include the Don Watson Memorial Award (for conspicuous service to the Australian trucking industry) and the Trucksafe John Kelly Memorial Awards (for a TruckSafe accredited operator that has implemented the safety accreditation scheme in an exceptional fashion).
The winners of the Craig Roseneder Award for Technical and Maintenance Excellence in the Workshop and the Castrol Vectron Industry Achievement Award will be announced later in the year.
The ATA’s Chairman, David Simon (pictured), said the awards formally recognised people and organisations that went above and beyond the requirements of their role.
“The National Trucking Industry Awards allow the industry to salute those who have worked hard, had the brilliant ideas, developed something new or shown exceptional dedication to the industry and their community,” he said.
“The new National Training Excellence Award will recognise and encourage businesses that use and develop effective programs to minimise risk for their workforce.
“This award will reward excellence in a different safety topic each year. In 2014, it will focus on the critically important issues of truck rollover prevention and appropriate speed for the conditions.”
Nominations close on Monday, April 28, 2014.
