Our top news story for 2023 was in fact a story that broke back in late 2021 – that’s the incredible gravitational pull that a high-horsepower V8 has for the Aussie trucking public. There’s still massive interest in Scania’s flagship rig, and for good reason: it’s a stonking truck on so many levels. Head to our Scania 770 V8 Extended Cab review for more information.

Who in the truck industry doesn’t love a big mega order? This story, which we ran in early March, fits the bill, with Sunshine State operator SGGS splashing out on a cool 120 new Mercedes-Benz Actros cab-overs. Actros already made up 37 of its then 80-strong fleet, but business must be rather healthy at SGGS, because this single order represents a massive expansion for the fleet – and a thorough endorsement of ’Benz’s impressive Actros platform.

In the heavy-duty truck world, there’s nothing like a new model to get chins wagging, and that was the case with our story on the new DAF XG+, which made its Aussie public debut at the Brisbane Truck Show in May. We climbed all over it inside and out at Brisbane, and can report it’s even more stunning in the metal than it is in the pics. Modern and bristling with cutting-edge technology, the XG+ is sure to sharpen the DAF offering when it goes on sale in 2024, and better yet it will be built right here in Australia, in PACCAR’s Bayswater production facility.

Another enduring story that was originally published in 2022, it seems there's plenty of interest in the latest evolution of UD's heavy-duty flagship, the Quon. With updates spanning engine and driveline enhancements, safety upgrades, and efficiency gains, it's no minor refresh either, with numerous improvements all adding up to a better mousetrap for the Quon, which is available in 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 formats.

This news article also sprang from the 2023 Brisbane Truck Show, where the first glimpse of Mack’s palatial new 70-inch sleeper really caused a stir. Fully integrated into a Mack Super-Liner, the roomy and well-appointed cab was a prototype that had been spirited around Brisbane prior to the show opening under cover of darkness. Orders are now open for the 70-inch sleeper, and we’ve already spent a couple of days in one ourselves as a part of this 2023 Mack Super-Liner review.
