The Perth Truck & Trailer Show is ‘taking a break’ according to the show’s website. No doubt due to the downturn in the market in Perth, organisers have decided that there is not enough interest from the big manufacturers to support the show.
However spokesman for Premiere Events which manages the show, Peter Woods, said the show will return. "There’s a downturn in Perth and there has been for a couple of years," Mr Woods told Trucksales. "So we’re taking a bit of time off to re-assess but we will come back bigger and better."
Mr Woods said that usually the big manufacturers and importers attend the Brisbane truck show and have the launches of their big products there in May, and then travel west to the Perth show and display their wares there.
"We’re going to go to Brisbane and see how that goes, and then I think the Perth Show will be back in 2019 following the next Brisbane show.
"There are a lot of people here who want the Perth show. There are trailer manufacturers over here and a lot of other associated business who will miss the show this year and are keen to have it back as soon as possible," he said.
"However in light of the market changes in WA it’s time for a restructure."
Mr Woods suggested that the Perth Show may grow to incorporate other industries: "While we’re taking look at it [the show], we may broaden the base with the inclusion of industry and machinery. It’s a great opportunity give the show a real boost," he said.
Mr Woods was keen to point out that while things were a bit quiet in the West, it’s not all doom and gloom: "The economy isn’t too bad. People are still flying in and out of the mines and mining continues," he said. "But it’s the building that has quietened off and that’s why the trucking industry has slowed.
"A few years ago you couldn’t find a driver for love or money, but that’s changed a bit now. We just have to wait for the next cycle and then we’ll be back," Mr Woods concluded.
