New South Wales Police are targeting speeding, fatigue and illegal mobile phone use in Operation Saturation, a fresh blitz launched recently by NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay and Police Minister Michael Gallacher to arrest the state’s soaring road toll.
As of March 3, 2014, a total of 69 lives had been lost on NSW roads, 19 more than for the corresponding 2013 period.
The campaign will see NSW Police Highway Patrol and general duties patrols targeting areas where recent fatalities and serious crashes have occurred, while mobile speed camera enforcement will also play a large role.
Gallacher said the revenue raised through the camera fines would go directly to the state’s Community Road Safety Fund, where it would pay for road safety initiatives, education and increased police patrols.
Of the state’s road toll to date almost half have been single vehicle crashes – accidents typically involving excess speed and/or fatigue.
Operation Saturation will extend into late March 2014.
