Powerful Hino 300s ready for launch

Hino is poised to unveil its new 300 Series High Horsepower light-duty trucks to the nation's media

Hino is upping the ante in Australia's hotly-contested light-duty truck market, with its new 300 Series High Horsepower models set to be unveiled to the nation's press this week.

First unveiled at Melbourne's International Truck, Trailer & Equipment Show in early April, media outlets will soon get a chance to sample the new models' power-packed credentials over a varied route from Sydney to the home of horsepower in this country: Mount Panorama, at Bathurst.

The route will see the trucks pushed up and over the Blue Mountains, the inclines sure to put Hino's claims for the new High Horsepower models to the test.

With more powerful engines and a revised chassis, Hino says the new trucks offer "bigger payloads and market-leading performance".

The new 300 Series 920, with six-speed manual transmission, produces a claimed 190hp (139kW) and 510Nm, while the 300 Series 921, with six-speed auto, produces a claimed 200hp (151kW) and 600Nm. Hino says the latter is the most powerful truck in its class and the first light-duty in Australia to crack 200hp.

The new straight-frame chassis, meanwhile, is wider and stronger, also featuring a grid hole design to aid the installation of a range of bodies and auxiliary components.

Cosmetically, the trucks are very much a part of Hino's 300 Series family but exhibit, in Hino's words, "a slightly tougher stance", and are also differentiated by the 920/921 badging and a chrome grille and bumper accent.

The new models are available in both single-cab and crew-cab configurations.

According to Hino's Manager – Product Strategy, Daniel Petrovski, the models are set to give Australia's light-duty truck market a real shake-up.

"The new models considerably boost the performance and application suitability of the 300 Series range," he said.

"It's not just the most powerful light-duty truck Hino has released in Australia, it's the most powerful light truck to be sold into the Australian market.

"Customer acceptance of the current 300 Series has been very positive, and we expect the 920 and 921 models to increase the range's already broad appeal."
