An upgrade to a northern section of Brisbane's Gateway Motorway has moved a step closer to reality, with the recent naming of a contractor for the earthworks for the Gateway Motorway North project at Nudgee, in the city's northern suburbs.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, together with the Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Scott Emerson, have announced that Fulton Hogan has emerged as the successful tenderer for the project, which will eventually see a widening of an 11.3 kilometre section of motorway between Nudgee and Bracken Ridge.
Fulton Hogan, which is currently working on a number of other major road projects in the state, will carry out the initial earthworks and draining upgrades required either side of the existing motorway.
Mr Truss said the project, once completed, will bring significant relief to the motorway's users.
"This milestone is great news for more than 75,000 drivers using the motorway daily," he said.
"The Gateway Motorway North project will not only improve journey times for motorists, but also improve freight efficiency along the National Freight Network."
Mr Emerson said the project's scope was significant.
"The Gateway Motorway North project will include widening 11.3 kilometres of motorway from four to six lanes between Nudgee and Bracken Ridge, upgrading the Nudgee Interchange and widening the Deagon Deviation to two lanes in each direction," he said.
The early works are expected to be completed by mid 2015, with the construction phase to begin soon after. The project is expected to be completed by late 2018.
