Heavy-duty truck sales may be struggling here in Australia but business is booming for Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), which just experienced a record month for orders (for both domestic and export markets) of trucks up the heavier end of the commercial vehicle spectrum.
DTNA secured orders of a massive 31,304 Class 6 to 8 trucks in October, the figure representing the single largest monthly order intake for the manufacturer and month-on-month growth of 116.9 per cent. It's also the largest-ever monthly order for a US truck manufacturer, period.
In the USA industry orders were up 61.2 per cent month on month, while DTNA's orders accounted for a hefty 51.9 per cent share of the total of 60,307 units, says America's Commercial Transportation Research Co.
A large influx of fleet orders is said to be behind the spike in growth, along with accelerating orders from small- to medium-sized operators who are fast-tracking the replacement of older trucks.
According to Dr Wolfgang Bernhard, Daimler Board of Management Member responsible for Daimler Trucks and Buses, Daimler's international structure has positioned the company well for future growth.
"Daimler Trucks has a broader global footprint than any other manufacturer, with strong pillars in Europe, America, and Asia," he said.
"Intelligent platforms and components sharing enable us to deliver in each region the products with the best total cost of ownership for our customers.
"The number of incoming orders generated by Daimler Trucks North America in October demonstrates that our strategy is effective and that our vehicles provide customers with tangible benefits."
DTNA dominates the North American market with a market share of nearly 38 per cent.
Martin Daum, President and CEO of DTNA, said the company was elated with the record October result.
"Daimler Trucks North America is proud of our record-breaking October and we offer our sincere thanks to our customers and dealers for their confidence in our products," he said.
"Our customers' dedication to acquiring vehicles with a proven real-cost-of-ownership solution has driven sales of the Cascadia Evolution [pictured], as well as the expansion of Daimler Trucks North America’s entire product portfolio."
