Scania's CEO, Martin Lundstedt (pictured), has good reason to smile, with the Swedish trucking giant announcing it achieved a record number of global order bookings over April, May and June this year.
Orders were placed for 20,987 trucks worldwide compared to 20,694 for the corresponding 2013 period, the figure – Scania's highest for a second quarter – equating with growth of 1.4 per cent.
European orders improved compared to the first quarter of 2014 despite a drop in Russia attributed to the region's recent instability. A total of 9410 trucks were ordered in Europe, the figure representing a six per cent drop thanks to 2013's strong pre-buy of Euro 6 models.
Latin American orders dropped by 31 per cent thanks to falling demand in Brazil and Argentina, where subsidies for new vehicles have decreased, while a surge in orders in the Middle East saw growth for the Asia region increase by 185 per cent.
Orders in Africa were stable while Scania achieved growth in Oceania. Growth for Africa and Oceania combined totalled 12 per cent.
Scania says the positive upswing will see it ramp up production in the European autumn, with an influx of new staff likely to meet the demand.
Scania Australia says it also enjoyed a strong second quarter, with the majority of orders taken to be filled by the end of 2014.
