Redarc launches updated handbrake alarm

Heavy vehicle runaways are more common that most of us think: on average, one per day, according to Dr Peter Hart, director of the Hartwood Consulting Division of ATTAR

Accidentally leaving the park brake off on a truck can be disastrous and lead to a runaway truck resulting in damage to the truck – or worse.

Sometimes, as a runaway begins, the driver is able to jump back on board and apply the parking brake, but often becomes a victim when run over by the vehicle.

sometimes the driver can get back in to apply the handbrake sometimes not

There are integrated parking brake systems, such as BrakeSafe that we reported on in 2019. This device automatically warns the driver and applies the parking brake if the driver forgets to do so.

Redarc alarm

Redarc’s lower-cost alarm system doesn’t apply the parking brake, but it does provide an audible and visual warning if the door is opened and the handbrake is not applied. Once the alarm starts, it stays active until the handbrake is applied, even if the door is closed again.

In September 2021, Redarc launched a new ‘connectorised’ version of its handbrake alarm.

The Redarc 'connectorised' handbrake alarm.

The HBA1224 handbrake alarm is compatible with 12V and 24V systems and features a built-in LED warning light and piezo buzzer. It can also trigger an external LED, light or alarm when combined with a suitable relay.

Previously only available with a fly-lead loom, the new HBA1224-003 introduces a prewired 10-way, nine-wire Molex connector. A corresponding mating connector is available separately (HBAKIT-001) or as a kit with HBA1224-003 (HBA1224-003-KIT1).

The new ‘connectorised’ alarm is said to minimise installation complexity when integrating it into wiring harnesses for fleet installations, or for applications where crimping is preferable to soldering.

The installation booklet points out fitment simplicity: Blue and white wires are positive and ground for the door switch; Yellow and green wires are positive and ground for the handbrake switch; Purple is to the dome light; Brown is to dash handbrake light and Grey is for an optional external relay.

The compact unit measures just 50x30x25mm, making it small enough for dash mounting in most vehicles and machinery.

Redarc’s Ben Marsh, general manager of aftermarket sales ANZ explained: “The new connectorised handbrake alarm provides another option for our fleet customers, ensuring that Redarc continues to have the best solution for improving vehicle safety.”

Like all Redarc products, the HBA1224-003 comes with nation-wide support, including a two-year hassle free warranty and after-sales service to answer any questions.
