Think you’re a dab hand behind the wheel of a truck or bus? Here’s your chance to prove it – Scania Australia has announced it will soon be holding its 2014 Scania Driver Competitions, with online registration for the skill- and knowledge-based shootout opening on Monday, March 24, 2014.
It’s not just glory up for grabs, either – there’s a prize worth $10,000 on offer for the best driver in both the truck and bus categories.
A panel of expert judges will be seeking out the drivers who display the best combination of fuel-efficient driving, skilful manoeuvring, and safety, with the process beginning with online registration.
The next phase will see participants answer a series of multiple-choice questions and then, in July, a round of open-ended questions, before the top 12 competitors converge on the national final on Queensland’s Gold Coast in October.
Scania Australia was one of the first nations to host the Scania Driver Competitions, its success in 2012 prompting many other markets to follow suit. This year it’s hoped the Scania Driver Competitions will attract an estimated 85,000 people across 40 countries.
According to Scania Australia’s Brand & Communications Manager, Ron Szulc, the competition brings with it many benefits.
“Scania believes the driver is the single most important asset for economy, environment and safety,” he said.
“The competition testing will place emphasis on efficient and safe driving practices as well as reinforce the values of driving with a positive attitude.
“We are once again inviting drivers who feel they have above average ability behind the wheel to get involved and show off what they can do. The competitions are open to all drivers who have an MC licence for trucks or an HR licence for buses. Entries are not restricted to drivers of Scania trucks or buses; all drivers who fit the criteria are welcome to participate.
“The competition will test competitors’ knowledge of the road rules, specialist rules relating to truck or bus driving, as well as being able, in the national final, to present themselves as impressive ambassadors of their chosen profession.
“As in the past, the national final will bring together a group of highly motivated and knowledgeable drivers who will undergo on-road testing of their driving ability, manoeuvring tests to show their low-speed positioning skills, as well as a test of their practical knowledge and their ability to talk about their profession in a media interview-style environment,” he says.
