Renault and Fiat sign LCV deal

European marques Renault and Fiat have signed an agreement that will see Fiat supplied with an LCV based on a Renault platform

Renault has announced it will be providing Fiat with a light commercial vehicle based on an existing Renault platform.

While details of the tie-up are scarce, the French maker has said the vehicle will be produced in France from the second quarter of 2016.

The addition to the Fiat Professional range of LCVs will feature "unique and distinctive elements", states a Renault press release.

Renault has been Europe's top-selling manufacturer of light commercial vehicles since 1998, with its compact Kangoo, mid-size Trafic and large-capacity Master models available in hundreds of variants.

The Fiat Professional equivalents currently comprise the Doblo (coming to Australia later this year), Scudo and Ducato, with those last two models the result of collaboration with PSA Peugeot Citroen.

In Europe, Fiat Professional also markets the Fiorino, which is smaller than the Doblo, and the Strada pick-up.

At this stage it's unclear which Renault LCV model will be targeted by Fiat but there's certainly plenty of activity right now in the French maker's workhorse stable, with both updated Trafic and Master models hitting European roads in 2014.
