Also fitted to the Freighter T-Liner MkII trailer we recently hauled behind a Scania G 480 were two different types of Freighter load restraint gates. Released in August 2016, each gate – either the 'Sliding Post Load Restraint Gate' or the 'Hanging Load Restraint Gate' – adopts a slightly different approach to keeping a load in place and keeping operators safe. Freighter says each one can provide a rated load restraint of up to 1300kg per pallet space.
Sliding Post Load Restraint Gates
The Sliding Post Load Restraint Gate is hung from a top rail via a spring mechanism, the latter taking most of the weight of the gate itself once it has been lifted out of its lower locating slots. The gate can then be swung on its track towards the rear of the trailer.
The safety benefits here are twofold: injuries caused through lifting the gate are virtually eliminated and, because it remains attached to the top rail at all times, there's no risk of the gate falling on the operator.
Of course, it's also far quicker to remove and replace the gates.
Freighter General Manager, Mario Colosimo, said the gate delivers a significant boost to productivity.
"The unique and innovative gate mechanism also allows for the removal of additional moving parts in comparison to a number of existing systems, which increases reliability and uptime," he said.
Hanging Load Restraint Gate
The Hanging Load Restraint Gate, meanwhile, combines the benefits of a spring-assisted hanging gate with tabs on the gates and posts to add an additional level of load security.
This means load restraint is provided at all four corners of the gate, which also prevents damage to the gate if the load is resting against it.
Because there's a constant upward force applied to the gate, the rollers remain lifted off the track – thereby preventing damage through vibration and track wear.
"The end result is a sturdier, more reliable post system," said Mr Colosimo.
While Trucksales didn't have to load or unload any freight, each style of load restraint gate was certainly easy to use – both to release and to return to a secured position – with each operation taking very little time.
Compared to older traditional gates, it's easy to see how these gates are far superior – for both operator safety and productivity. With the trucking industry up the pointy end for WHS issues in this country, Freighter's latest innovations have to be a solid step in the right direction.
