Extra-heavy AB triple roadtrains will now be allowed to use a section of the Bogan Way and the McGrane Way in central New South Wales, following a decision to initiate a six-month trial.
According to a recent ABC News report, the trial will see a route between a farm near Hay and a Narromine seed company opened up to the roadtrains, even though the roads are said to be too narrow under the state’s Roads and Maritime Services guidelines.
Speaking with ABC News, Parke’s Mayor, Ken Keith, said that while there was a potential risk of the heavier trucks damaging the roads, there were no concerns regarding safety.
“It [the risk of accidents] actually probably decreases because AB triples probably track better than the current road trains that are using that route,” he said.
“The damage to that road from the extra weight when they go off the edge is the bigger concern.”
Parks Shire Council says it’s been steadily improving the Bogan Way in recent years but there was still a 25km section to be widened. Council estimates the remaining improvements will span another five years.
