Alternative fuel to clean the air in Spanish capital
The City of Madrid has initiated an ambitious program to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions with the stated goal to ban diesel by 2025.
As part of the program, a complete renewal of the city’s bus fleet has begun. As part of the fleet turnover, Scania will deliver 160 gas-powered city buses. The municipal transport company, EMT Madrid, will take delivery of 80 new buses this year with another 80 buses added to the fleet in 2018. This order is in addition to the 46 gas buses ordered last year.
Half the EMT fleet of more than 1500 buses is already gas powered and with the scheduled deliveries that share will increase.
"Thanks to lower carbon emissions and noise reduction, interest in gas-fuelled operations has surged worldwide,” says Anna Carmo e Silva, Head of Buses and Coaches at Scania. “The Scania buses with the acclaimed Euro 6 gas engine is comparable in performance to a diesel engine. It is therefore an increasingly popular option, especially among European operators."
Bodies for the 12-metre low-floor buses will be built by Madrid company Castrosua.
