There was a decidedly green theme in the air at the Scania stand at the recent Brisbane Truck Show, where the Swedish truck maker was drawing plenty of interest with its Euro 6 offerings and in particular its first Euro 6 V8-engined trucks to be displayed in Australia.
With vivid green paintwork underlining the Euro 6 technology, taking pride of place on the display was Scania's new flagship, the V8-engined R 730. With a 16-litre V8 engine said to produce a massive 730hp and 3500Nm of torque, it's a monster of an engine with an output to match, capable of taking the toughest of tasks in its stride while maintaining the latest emissions compliance.
The R 730 was backed up by its smaller sibling, a Euro 6 compliant R 580, along with a number of other Euro 6 offerings.
The CEO of Scania Australia, Roger McCarthy (pictured), said the brand was at the leading edge of environmental awareness, both overseas and now in Australia.
"Here on display we have Scania's leadership in Euro 6 engine technology," he said.
"We have here on display the first Euro 6 V8 engines to enter Australia: our flagship, the R 730 V8, and also the Scania R 580 V8. I wouldn't like to say the R 580 is the smaller sister, but it's going to prove to be a great success here in Australia. So now operators in Australia can experience Scania V8 power at Euro 6 levels."
Mr McCarthy said the company's Euro 6 offerings were already gaining significant traction.
"We've been promoting Euro 6 for the last two years and we already have a number of vehicles on the market," he said.
"We have the first five Euro 6 vehicles operating with TNT in a light B-double truck application, and on the bus side of our business we've recently supplied 77 Euro 6 city route buses to ACTION Buses in Canberra.
"I think it's fair to say that we are really the 'clean-air kings' across truck and bus businesses here in Australia. We're ready to assist environmentally focussed customers to better understand the impact and importantly the opportunities Scania Euro 6 technology can have on their businesses."
Scania also used this year's Brisbane Truck Show to emphasise its suite of 'Total Transport Solutions' – ways in which operators can drive down costs and boost profitability through optimising vehicle specifications, the use of R&M contracts, truck rental, and genuine parts, and by utilising driver training and telematics.
