Scania patents soar

Scania reports it lodged a record number of patent applications and invention disclosures throughout 2013
Research and development is continuing apace at Scania, with the manufacturer’s head office in Sweden recently reporting it submitted a record number of 285 patents applications and over 700 invention disclosures last year.
Scania says the number of invention disclosures made in 2013 was 40 per cent higher than the corresponding figure for 2012, with the bulk of the breakthroughs stemming from developments in the fields of electronics and control systems.
The most fertile ground within the company comprised the department for powertrain control systems development and the department for hybrid technology development – in those two departments there was an average of five inventions for every 10 employees.
The head of Scania’s Patent Department, Stina Sjögren, said the company’s research and development program was operating at a high level of momentum, with more ground-breaking work to come.
“We are excited to see new record levels year after year,” she said.
“With all the inventions in our pipeline, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we reach an even higher figure when we summarise 2014.”
