Scania AB has lifted the covers off a new, limited-edition V8-powered truck. The new Blue Stream is the result of a collaboration between Scania and renowned Swedish custom truck builder Svempa Bergendahl, and serves as a tribute to the original Scania Streamline of 1991.
Just 200 examples of the Blue Stream, which features an R-series cab, will be produced.
According to Scania’s Product Manager Long-haulage, Kristoffer Nyberg, the reintroduction of the Scania Streamline in 2013 prompted a flood of positive feedback, plus plenty of reminiscing from customers who had driven the original model.
“Many especially recalled the striking appearance of the light blue truck with pink and purple striping,” he says.
“When we decided to honour that icon with a limited-edition model of the new Scania Streamline, we of course wanted to involve Svempa, since there is no better man for the task. The limited-edition Blue Stream is characterised by a unique metallic exterior, striping and interior details, and is produced by Scania’s regular production system.”
Nyberg says the Blue Stream isn’t just some show pony.
“Blue Stream will be a unique but yet affordable truck within its segment,” he says.
“The styling is bold and striking, but these trucks are extremely well-suited for all types of tough transportation tasks that require the kind of solid power that Scania’s V8 engines provide. Coupled with a full air deflector kit and typical hallmark values such as Scania Opticruise and class-leading fuel efficiency, Blue Stream will be just as productive as every Scania.”
Jan Richter is the head designer at Bergandahl’s custom truck business, Svempas. He says the company was only too pleased to be involved with the project.
“We were thrilled to get this assignment,” he says.
“We were of course tempted to use the original baby blue colour but, even though iconic, we wanted something that reflects 2014, and ended up with a more vibrant blue metallic colour that changes tone depending on viewing angle and light conditions.”
Other eye-catching aspects include the gloss-black front grille, ventilated leather seats with contrast stitching, and a unique numbered badge on the dash.
The model will also benefit from a number of comfort and convenience option packs, while a range of further options will also be available.
The V8-engined Blue Stream will be available in four outputs: 500hp, 560hp, 620hp and 730hp.
While there is no word yet on Australian availability, Scania Australia has said it will look at bringing limited numbers of the model here if there is sufficient customer demand. If that comes to pass, they would most likely be imported with Highline cabs, rather than the Topline cab depicted, which isn’t generally offered to the Australian market.
“Each Blue Stream will be unique,” says Nyberg.
“But what they all have in common is that they will carry the Scania Streamline heritage further, while delivering both profit and pride to their owners.”
