Scania to deliver 74-tonne electric truck

Swedish truck maker pushes the boundaries in electrification at the heavy end of the trucking spectrum

Scania has sold an electric truck to a Swedish mining company that, with a full load and trailer, weighs in at 74 tonnes.

The truck will be delivered to mining firm Boliden shortly, and serves as part of Scania’s push to decrease its CO2 emissions by 40 per cent by 2030.

The truck will be pressed into service by haulage firm Renfors Åkeri, and will complete 30-kilometre round trips to and from the mine in northern Sweden.

“Once again, we show that it is technically possible with completely electrified solutions for heavy vehicles,” says Fredrik Allard, Head of E-mobility, Scania.

“The development is rapid! It is vital that the infrastructure keeps up to enable more customers to take this step. It is also very valuable to work on this kind of concept for heavy electrified operations with players such as Boliden, that wants to push development, not least in the environmental area.

Jonas Ranggård, Program Manager, Boliden, says the truck will not only fulfil its primary role, but while enhancing the company’s climate credentials too.

”To try an electrified solution for very heavy vehicles at an early stage and contribute to the development and transition to sustainable solutions are very much in line with our agenda,” he says.

“The electrified Scania truck will reduce emissions in one of the most important flows in our operations and further strengthen our high climate performance.”

The truck will also serve as an important test bed for Boliden, opening up the possibility of electrifying more of the company’s fleet in due course.

The technical solutions of the electrified truck is based on the current series-produced technology but with stronger components for the truck’s heavy-duty operation. This powerful load capacity and an even longer range are a part of Scania’s series-produced solutions within 24 months. The delivery of this truck is planned for the second quarter 2022.
