Scania has expanded its range of Euro 6 engines, with the Swedish brand recently unveiling a new 450hp, 13-litre six-cylinder unit fitted only with Selective Catalytic Reduction technology. The SCR-only unit complements the regular 450hp engine, which is fitted with both SCR and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems.
Scania says the new engine follows on from its success in Europe with an SCR-only, 410hp, 13-litre engine, and offers reduced complexity and weight and improved fuel efficiency.
The Head of Product Management for Scania Trucks, Joel Granath, says the new engine model – DC13 147 – will have bottom-line benefits for linehaul operators.
"Just as with the extremely frugal 410hp model that appeared last [European] autumn, this engine is ideal especially for linehaul customers who prioritise low fuel consumption, but who don’t want to give up torque or driver comfort," he says.
"According to our own calculations running a Scania Streamline, this results in a 1 per cent fuel saving compared with the previous model using both EGR and SCR, everything else being equal."
The new engine requires neither a variable geometry turbo nor an EGR cooler but it does require a higher AdBlue content, up to an average of six per cent. Scania says its Euro 6 engines with SCR and EGR require roughly half the amount of AdBlue.
"We are convinced that Scania’s 450hp engine with only SCR will become a popular highway workhorse," says Granath.
"Using the SCR-only solution has been shown to lead to lower consumption, and it also saves some weight."
Scania says it will be bringing the new SCR-only, 450hp, 13-litre Euro 6 engine to Australia. While the new engine will bring benefits for linehaul customers, Scania says the SCR/EGR variant remains the preferred option for distribution customers.
