Mercedes-Benz has dominated the annual ‘Green Van’ eco awards held by respected German transport and logistics media outlet, VerkehrsRundschau.
The Sprinter 316 CDI claimed top honours in Green Van 2014, ahead of the Sprinter 313 CDI in second.
Assessed by a panel of expert judges and evaluated for fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, pollutant class ratings, payloads, cargo capacity and fuel-saving technology, the awards reflect the top models’ environmental impact and also their cost effectiveness.
The Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Volker Mornhinweg, said he was elated with the outcome.
“We’re delighted about this important award,” he said.
“We intentionally equipped the new Sprinter with numerous innovative technical features for enhancing fuel efficiency. We also focused on fulfilling the Euro VI standard early on. All of this has met with a great response, as we can see from our customers.”
Mercedes-Benz introduced the world’s first Euro 6 Sprinter in 2013. The van utilises BlueTec engine technology and a Selective Catalytic Reduction system that inject AdBlue into the exhaust gas, further lowering its emission of harmful gasses and particulates.
The end result, says Mercedes-Benz, is a combined fuel economy of 6.3L/100km and comparative carbon dioxide emissions of 167g/km.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is currently only available in Australia in a Euro 5 format. Mercedes-Benz Australia says it's investigating the possibility of bringing the Euro 6 models to our shores but at this stage it has no firm plans for release.
