Sprinter Transfer tackles Sydney 'on-demand' trial

Ten Mercedes-Benz minibuses set to take part in NSW's first trial of 'on-demand' public transport
Mercedes-Benz is about to embark on a landmark 'on-demand' public transport trial, with the brand to supply 10 of its Sprinter Transfer Minibuses for the Sydney-based project, starting from October.
Announced in August by the New South Wales Government in partnership with international transport company Transdev, the new Transdev Link on-demand ride service will offer a flexible service to and from major transport hubs, business precincts, shopping centres and more with commuters' homes.
Trips will be able to be booked via a smartphone app, online or over the phone, said Transdev CEO, Rene Lalande.
"The combination of on-demand transport, with traditional bus, rail and ferry services, can deliver better customer service outcomes, reduce congestion and offer value for money for Government," he said.
The Sprinter Transfer Minibuses in question will feature free WiFi, USB charging points, electric sliding doors and tinted windows, while some will be fitted with wheelchair lifts.

Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Diane Tarr, said the trial was a good match for the Mercedes-Benz Vans division's outlook on future mobility.
"One of the key pillars of our strategic future adVANce initiative is new mobility concepts for the on-demand transportation of goods and people," she said.
The Mercedes-Benz adVANce initiative focuses on meeting quickly changing customer needs with innovative solutions, and will see the company invest $A750 million in the fields of digitization, automation and robots in vans plus new mobility offerings until 2020.
"The trial fits perfectly with this direction and at the same time will showcase the functionality and reliability of our Sprinter Transfer Minibus," she said.
"Driving change and innovating to improve the convenience and comfort of public transport has the potential to positively impact so many people's lives. It's a fantastic initiative by both Transdev and the New South Wales Government and we are very pleased to be a part of it."
Beginning in October, the trial will see the Sprinters in service from 7.00am to 7.00pm, Monday to Friday, and on select weekend times in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, Manly and the Eastern Suburbs. Further 'on-demand' trials will take place in a further six regions of the city.
