Morcombe's Transport, a family-owned business based in Burrumbeet, Victoria, has turned to Western Star for the solution to its livestock transport needs.
The company recently purchased a Western Star 4900FXT with Stratosphere cab and Cummins ISXe5 engine, the latter fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) after-treatment system.
According to Mark Morcombe, driver comfort was high on his list of priorities when it came time to shop around for a new rig.
"One of the key things I was looking at in a new truck was a spacious sleeper cab," he said.
"Being a driver myself, I know how important it is to be able to stand up and walk around in the cab after a long drive, and to have plenty of storage space and room for all your personal possessions and things like a fridge. Western Star’s roomy 54-inch ‘Stratosphere’ cab satisfied all those requirements."
The SCR-equipped Cummins ISXe5 engine was also a major drawcard, Mr Morcombe said.
"I’ve always been a fan of Cummins engines and so the new 15-litre ISXe5 engine was the obvious choice," he said.
The engine is based on the current Cummins platform that runs an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, but it benefits from a new common rail fuel system, a single overhead camshaft and a wastegate turbocharger.
Now used to transport livestock both locally and interstate, Mr Morcombe says the latest purchase has already proven its worth.
"I'm really pleased with it," he said.
"The performance and fuel economy are both excellent. It drives really well on the road and despite its sizeable length, I find the manoeuvrability very good too."
Purchased through James Leo at Westar Truck Centre in Melbourne, Mr Morcombe said the purchase experience was smooth and easy. The truck was returned to the dealer for its first oil services, when Mr Morcombe had an auto greaser fitted for added peace of mind given the long periods of time the truck spends away.
