Over 100 immaculately polished working and historic trucks turned out for the annual Tasmanian Truck Show hosted by the Lions Club of Deloraine last weekend. The event is held at the spacious Agfest site just out of Carrick, 20 minutes west of Launceston.
Heavy rains earlier in the week turned logging tracks into boggy quagmires and by end of the working week on Friday afternoon most of the tippers and log trucks were covered in a brown coat of mud and road grime. To see them all polished in showroom condition at the show on Sunday was a tremendous effort.
One interesting event held at the show is the B-Double reversing competition which tests the skills of drivers' accuracy and speed reversing a B-Double down a short 'S' course. The competition was very tight with so many skillful operators taking up the challenge, however it was the smooth steady hand of Daryl Smith that earned him first place. Well done Daryl.
Meantime there were also plenty of activities for the kids with jumping castle, mini-jeeps and roller balls.
Picking a winner at any truck show is always a challenge. Some of the notable entries included, Highland Haulage’s 30th Anniversary Western Star, Treloar’s line-up of International Eagles, Earley Spreading’s MAN, Hingston’s Western Star 4800 complete with cattle crates, Deacon Logging’s immaculate T909 with folding skel and Gradco’s fleet of hardworking heavy haulage and quarry trucks.
However the judges have the final say and this year Nathan Dean, from Tasmanian Furniture Removals with his impressive Peterbuilt took out the Truck of the Show award.
The aim of the Lions Club is to provide a central location for dealers, owners and drivers to display their trucks and to actively promote safety within the trucking industry.
