Tasmania starts fatigue laws

Tasmania has joined the list of jurisdictions that now comply with national fatigue laws set out under the Heavy Vehicle National Law

National heavy-vehicle fatigue laws have commenced in Tasmania, with the regulations set out under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) coming into effect in the island state from Monday, March 30.

The implementation will see changes to work and rest limits for heavy vehicle drivers and the management of driver fatigue, says the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

The fatigue legislation now affects the following heavy vehicles in Tasmania: those with a GVM of over 12 tonnes; combinations with a total GVM of over 12 tonnes; buses with a seating capacity of over 12 adults (including the driver) that also have a GVM of over 4.5 tonnes; and a truck, or a combination including a truck, with a GVM of over 12 tonnes with a machine or implement attached to it.
