Tata hits the track in India

Indian behemoth Tata Motors has shifted its trucks into top gear, recently launching its first domestic truck racing championship
India’s largest auto manufacturer, Tata Motors, has officially launched its T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship, bringing the spectacle of truck racing to the Indian subcontinent for the very first time.
To be held at the Buddh International Circuit near New Delhi on March 23, 2014, the event will see six teams take part with a total of 12 Tata Prima heavy-duty trucks.
Staged with full FIA (Federation International de l’Automobile) and FMSCI (Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India) approval, the purpose-built trucks will be raced under BTRA (British Truck Racing Association) guidelines, with a mixture of domestic and international racing talent at the wheel.
Tata Motors’ Managing Director, Karl Slym, said the event ushered in a new age for the Indian truck industry.
“Through the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship, we are introducing yet another pioneering initiative in the Indian trucking space,” he said.
“With this we are not only adding an exciting new dimension to one of the largest trucking markets in the world, but also connecting our passion for trucks to the larger Indian audience.”
Tata’s Prima race trucks produce 370hp at 2100rpm and can attain a top speed of 110km/h. A significant number of modifications were made to align the trucks with BTRA guidelines, including changes to the fuel tank and brake cooling system. Guards were installed on the propeller shaft while racing seats and safety belts were also added.
The day’s format will see the main race preceded by a qualifying event.
