Tesla boss Elon Musk says his new pickup truck will be more functional than a Ford F150 and better than a Porsche 911 in terms of sports car attributes. “It’s going to be a truck that’s more capable than other trucks,” Musk said.
The Tesla ute will have four-wheel drive thanks to two electric motors and will have a range of “400 to 500 miles” (640 to 800 kilometres). The six seater will also be fitted with power outlets so tradies can run their tools directly from the vehicle without the need for a generator.
Commenting on the price of the Tesla, Musk said: “You should be able to buy a really great truck for $49k or less.” That’s US dollars, of course, which roughly translates to $70k in Australian dollars on today’s rates.
This price is well below the base price of the Rivian R1T, the vehicle which Ford tipped about half a billion dollars into, which starts at $US69,000.
Mr Musk said that the Tesla pickup would be unveiled later this year.
