Freight and logistics specialist TNT has commenced operations at a new 'Super Hub' facility in Sydney's western suburbs, with the Eskine Park site sprawling over 78,000 square metres and boasting over 30,000 square metres of warehouse space.
TNT says the facility is equipped with advanced technology that allows up to 25,000 parcels to be processed per hour.
The site is the first of three 'super hubs' to be opened by TNT this year, with further facilities in Melbourne and Brisbane to come online in the near future.
According to TNT Australia's Managing Director, Peter Langley, the Sydney site will deliver enhanced service for TNT customers.
"This new super hub enables us to streamline processes and implement some of the most advanced parcel sortation systems available," he said.
"The reduced processing times, increased accuracy and faster delivery outcomes will help us to provide even better and more efficient service to our customers."
The Erskine Park super hub incorporates Australia's first high-speed automatic sortation system for so-called 'incompatible' freight – items with dimensions in excess of 1.5 metres and/or weighing 30 kilograms or over.
The Erskine Park location has excellent freeways links to major freight corridors and is situated close to a number of high-volume TNT customers, says the firm.
Around 450 workers are employed at the site, with many being sourced from the local area.
Mr Langley said the addition of these super hubs to the TNT network reflects the changing face of the logistics sector.
"This has been brought about by the growth in e-commerce and a shift towards lighter-weight, higher-volume consignments," he said.
"Erskine Park and our soon-to-be-completed super hubs in Melbourne and Brisbane have been purpose built to address these changes and will enable us to meet the needs of our customers for many years to come."
