TNT orders first Euro 6 Scanias

TNT Express has ordered Australia's first Euro 6 Scania trucks, their impending delivery just a part of a wider Scania fleet purchase
Logistics specialist TNT Express has purchased the first Euro 6 Scania trucks destined for Australia, with the trucks due for delivery in October 2014.
The five P 450 prime movers are part of a larger fleet purchase that saw the company receive five Euro 5 P 440 prime movers in May, with another four such models due to arrive before the end of this year.
The Euro 6 P 450 is powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine that produces a claimed 450hp and 2350Nm, the latter delivered from 1000rpm.
It features Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to achieve Euro 6 compliance, with all the various systems, catalysts, sensors and filter housed within the truck's silencer.
Scania Australia's Fleet Sales Manager, Steven Alberse, says the Euro 6 purchase underlines the importance TNT places on lowering emissions.
"We are delighted that TNT Express has chosen the Scania Euro 6 offer with which to accentuate its commitment to cleaning its vehicles’ emissions profile," he says.
"TNT has a strong history of selecting low-emission vehicles and the Scania Euro 6 order now extends this philosophy further into the heavy-duty class above 16 tonnes."
The P 440 6x4 Euro 5 prime movers that arrived in May (pictured) are now working in single-trailer and B-double configurations in Melbourne, while the four due to arrive towards the end of the year are destined for use in Perth and Adelaide.
Mr Alberse says Scania is a major force in rolling out cleaner truck technology.
"In Europe Scania continues to be a leader in the supply of Euro 6 compliant solutions," he says.
"We have been supplying Euro 6 solutions for more than two years and we have continually expanded the range of engines available to customers there, including the availability of 450hp engines that can run on 100 per cent biodiesel or a just-released version that uses SCR only, which is ideal for long-distance applications. At present Scania’s European Euro 6 portfolio amounts to 18 engine options."
According to Rod Barnes, TNT Express Director, Southern Region, the company has an unwavering commitment to reducing its emissions.
"The aim of this initiative is to continue our work towards integrating more environmentally friendly vehicles onto our roads to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and revolutionise the way vehicles function," he says.
"TNT has been at the forefront of using low-emissions vehicles. In fact, we pioneered the introduction of low-emission hybrid vehicles for light-duty applications after commissioning our first hybrid truck in early 2008. This investment in Euro 6 technology for our heavy-duty fleet is a logical extension of that.
"We’re currently rolling out a significant infrastructure investment aimed at driving our future development and growth, and investing in these ultra-low-emissions vehicles will play a key role in continuing our journey as a sustainable and environmentally aware business."
