Toll Group has announced that construction has begun on its new freight sorting centre near Melbourne Airport, with the 71,000 square metre facility said to be worth an estimated $150 million.
Toll Group says the centre, which will be located on a 20-hectare site (artist's impression shown), will be the largest of its kind in the country, and will further enhance the freight and logistics giant's national distribution network.
According to Toll Group Managing Director, Brian Kruger, the new hub will streamline the company's freight delivery operations significantly.
"The custom-designed facility, with its highly specialised sortation system, will triple our current parcel sorting capacity in Melbourne to an unprecedented 35,000 parcels per hour," he said.
"Given the growth we’re seeing in online retail, it is important we continue to improve our already-extensive national network to make it second to none."
The facility is being developed in conjunction with Australia Pacific Airports (Melbourne) Pty Ltd, with Toll contributing $50 million and Melbourne Airport $100 million.
Once the centre becomes operational by the end of 2015, it will provide jobs for around 500 workers in both operational and administrative roles.
Toll Group said it's just one of several major projects the company has undertaken in recent times.
"This important part of our national network adds to our other industry-leading investments over the past few years that include the $170 million freight sorting facility that will soon start operating in Sydney," he said.
