Following on from the opening of its massive new freight processing facility in Sydney, logistics giant Toll Group has opened another new base, this time in Hobart.
Located on 6.8 hectares in the Brighton Transport Hub in the capital's northern suburbs, the new $24 million intermodal freight facility is spread over 17,000 square metres.
At the recent official opening of the facility Toll Group's Managing Director, Mr Brian Kruger (pictured, left) was joined by the Premier of Tasmania, Mr Will Hodgman (pictured, right) and the Mayor of Brighton, Tony Foster (pictured, centre).
According to Toll Group it's "the most modern and efficient transport terminal in the state" and will deliver improved domestic and international freight services.
However, Mr Kruger said the facility would see an overall reduction in road freight.
"Relocating to the new hub in Brighton will result in 42 fewer B-doubles and 100 fewer semi-trailer movements from the city of Hobart each day," he said.
"It also allows us to increase the amount of freight we can carry via rail. More freight on trains will mean fewer trucks on Tasmanian roads."
The new location will be home to around 150 employees and will offer both general and refrigerated freight handling, warehousing and distribution services, and shipping container storage.
Mr Kruger said the development will be of significant benefit to the Tasmanian economy.
"Toll has been a supporter of the development of the Brighton precinct for many years," he said.
"We see this as a long-term investment in Tasmania’s freight future, which has obvious flow-on economic benefits for Hobart and beyond.
"This $24 million investment underpins other key investments we’re making in the state, that includes the purchase of next-generation replacement vessels for our Bass Strait shipping service earmarked for 2018, as well as the redevelopment of the wharf and rail terminals in Burnie and Launceston."
Premier Hodgman said the new facility would give the state an appreciable boost.
"Toll Group’s investment in the Brighton Transport Hub is a significant and welcomed investment in Tasmanian infrastructure," he said.
