Truck sales surge in Europe

Registrations of new commercial vehicles in Europe up 12.9% for the first half of 2015, with heavy trucks up by over 20%

The latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) shows sales of new commercial vehicles are continuing to power ahead in Europe, with new registrations for the first six months totalling 1,030,140 units – an increase of 12.9 per cent over the previous corresponding period.

Statistics for the month of June 2015 showed strong increases in new registrations across the board, with significant six-month gains for light commercials up to 3.5t (up 12.3%), medium and heavy commercials over 3.5t (up 15.9%), heavy commercials over 16t (up 20.3%), and buses and coaches over 3.5t (up 16.9%).

In stark contrast to the Australian market, where heavy-duty truck sales are contracting, a total of 126,039 commercial vehicles over 16t were registered over the first half of this year. The UK led the major markets with a massive increase of 57.7%, followed by Spain (up 47.4%), Italy (up 19.1%) and France (up 9.4%).

June figures saw growth of 18.6% for total commercial vehicle registrations over June 2014's tally, marking the sixth consecutive month of increases.
