Trucking Australia 22 was officially declared open this morning by ATA Chair David Smith. The conference, the first face-to-face ATA conference since 2019, is being held at the Star Casino on the Gold Coast.
Over 400 delegates are in attendance from all parts of Australia and all facets of the trucking industry and a wide variety of topics are being covered in depth at the conference.
In opening the conference, Mr Smith said that one of the hot topics under discussion during the conference would be the ATA’s 2022 Policy Charter which has its main aims of boosting safety and productivity.
“The charter calls for a dramatic improvement in road safety with an aspirational target: a 25 per cent reduction per year in crashes involving trucks. Under our plan, the Austalian Governement would fund and operate all major freight roads. There would be a 10-year $5 billion truck roads and rest area program and drivers would always have a safe place to stop.
“It would be backed by a new Road Transport Act, which would replace the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and massively improve the industry’s productivity. The Act would allow combinations like A-doubles and type-two road trains on all major freight routes and eliminate 42,000 access permits per year.
“The Act would require every business operating trucks to have a Safety Management System. We’d get rid of work diaries and record keeping offences. You’ll get all the details as we go through the conference.” Mr Smith said.
Other topics to be dusucssed at Trucking Australia 22 include:
• Leveraging the Supply Chain Crisis with our panel of experts
• Policy Reset with the team from the ATA
• Transitioning to Zero Emissions
• Diversity in Trucking incorporating our Driving Change Diversity Champions
• Healthy heads in Trucks and Sheds Roadshow
• Solving the skills shortage
Mr Smith said that Trucking Australia 22 will bring together road transport industry members from a wide variety of roles, from drivers to workshop staff, operators to OEM representatives, to discuss all the pertinent issues facing road transport today. And of course the three-day conference will include a wide variety of social and networking events, include the Gala Awards dinner.
ATA Chair David Smith says Trucking Australia 22 will help the industry make up for lost time.
