trucksales Safety Award 2024: The Winner!

The NHVR’s Don’t #uck With a Truck safety message has won the prestigious trucksales Safety Award for 2024

Targeting young people, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s Don’t #uck With a Truck is worthy winner of the trucksales Safety Award.

The campaign has been running for two years and is designed to educate young drivers. It is aimed at 16 to 25 year olds and features a catchy slogan targeting that demographic.

“The Safety Award can go to a truck manufacturer, a trailer company, a parts or accessories business or even a government department as we see here,” said trucksales editor Geoff Middleton.

“Or judges saw the NHVR’s campaign as a multi-faceted attempt to educate the younger generation with an on-going message that you cannot mess about when you’re around trucks.

“The fact that the campaign was short-listed last year shows that the idea has longevity, and this year it was aimed at Schoolies, which we thought was a great concept.”

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said the campaign demonstrates how young L and P licence holders can drive safely around trucks, including rules to follow when trucks are turning, stopping and how to overtake a truck.

The latest part of the campaign has been targeting Schoolies

“The campaign is intentionally provocative and is designed to grab the target audience’s attention and start important conversations around road safety.

“Getting an L or P plate is a big step in a young person’s life – it is essential they have the information and skills to stay safe around trucks and develop positive long-term driving behaviours.

“Our goal is to prevent situations where a young driver could be in a lane next to a turning truck, or they pull in front of a truck too soon,” Mr Petroccitto said.

A big part of the campaign is an educational trailer

A survey of 500 L and P licence holders aged between 16 to 25 found more than three quarters (78%) of participants were unable to identify the correct stopping distance for a prime mover semi-trailer truck travelling 80km/h, which is 116 metres.

Less than half (45%) knew to keep one lane either side of a truck free when it is turning.

We hope that the Award encourages the NHVR to continue its good work educating our young people about road safety and how to behave around heavy vehicles.

And if you hadn’t already figured it out, the missing letter in slogan is an M. www.dontmuckwithatruck.com.au
