Uber’s autonomous trucks on the move

Self-driving trucks are now delivering freight

Ride-share company Uber is now delivering freight in Arizona USA through its transport company Uber Freight.

Uber Freight said this week that its autonomous trucks were delivering freight for customers throughout Arizona and that its testing phase was over.

Uber’s technology got a huge boost when the company bought the fledgling autonomous vehicle company Otto for a reputed $US650m which gave them the technology to push forward with the autonomous truck program.

The company's first delivery was a load of 48,000 cans of beer in Colorado.

Uber has been using the Topock weigh station in Arizona to switch drivers from the automated trucks to local drivers who take the truck to its final destination.

Uber says it always has a safety operator who's a licensed truck driver at the wheel of the self-driving trucks. These drivers are also trained in controlling autonomous vehicles.

Uber Freight says it plans to have transfer hubs like Topock all over the US in the years to come.
