Rays Haulage, a Sydney-based logistics firm that specialises in transporting steel, says it's reaping the benefits of three customised UD PK 17 280 Condors it's had on its fleet since last April.
The company had approached its local UD Trucks dealer to handle the modification process, which saw the trucks' cabs shortened to roughly two-thirds of their original length. The modification allows the trucks to access tighter construction sites and carry up to 12m-long lengths of steel in addition to the rear-mounted crane, giving the business an edge in an increasingly competitive market.
Ray Rahman, Director of Rays Haulage, says the shortened cabs have enhanced the business's prospects considerably.
"Our PK 17 280 trucks can enter smaller sites that our competitors can’t," he says.
"This means we’ve been able to expand our customer reach."
Mr Rahman says his UD trucks have underpinned his firm's success.
"I can't praise UD’s trucks enough," he says.
"The durability and reliability has enabled us to build a reputation in the construction industry as dependable and innovative.
"The modification process and service by the UD dealership was also straightforward. We asked and they said they could do it and came back with exactly what I needed."
According to UD Trucks salesman John Moore, the PK cabs take extensive modifications in their stride.
"The PK cabs are extremely strong and are able to handle the modification, which means owners will still get the toughness, safety and reliability they’ve come to expect from UD trucks," he says.
"From a driver point of view they’re comfortable, provide excellent driver vision and have a tighter turning circle. These are important attributes that Ray and his drivers have come to expect from UD trucks, and which have over the years meant that his buying preference stays within UD rather than other brands."
Jon McLean, UD Trucks Vice President, says UD works hard to accommodate its customers' requirements.
"At UD Trucks we understand that our trucks help drive your business," he says.
"Our aim is to listen to our customers and offer a solution that will best suit their needs."
Rays Haulage has over 20 UD trucks in its fleet and will take delivery of a fourth shortened Condor in the near future.
