UK’s best-selling vehicle for 2022 is a van?

Ford Transit Custom claims top spot in the UK for a second consecutive year with over 40,000 sales in 2022

While our love affair with the dual-cab ute continues unabated, and the Toyota HiLux has been named as the best-selling car in Australia for 2022, the Ford Transit Custom has been crowned the best-selling vehicle in the UK for the past year.

Ford sold 42,762 Transit Custom vehicles in the UK in 2022 – more than double that of its closest rival, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter – achieving 36.3 per cent of the one-tonne van segment. When combined with sales of its passenger carrying version, Tourneo Custom, Ford holds a 39.8 per cent share of the segment.

This represents more than one in three one-tonne commercial vehicles sold in the year.

"We are so proud to see the Transit Custom crowned as the best-selling vehicle in the UK for the second consecutive year," said Mandy Dean, Ford Pro lead for UK & Ireland. "This accolade is a testament to the tireless efforts and dedication of our team, as well as the loyalty of our customers.”

The all-electric eTransit Custom has been locked in for Australia, possibly next year. (See story below.)

“The Transit van serves as a vital tool for a variety of trades and professions and keeps Britain moving. With a wide range of body styles and configurations and with new all-electric versions added to the line-up, Ford is helping customers move into a more productive future whilst helping to meet their corporate sustainability commitments.”

Meanwhile, the newly-introduced E-Transit has quickly become the UK’s best-selling electric van in the two-tonne segment, with over 1750 orders received last year from delivery and distribution, supermarket and hire customers.

E-Transit Custom for 2023

With production starting in late 2023, the all-electric sibling of the UK’s best-selling van is designed from the ground-up to fit into the Ford Pro ecosystem of productivity-enhancing, value-adding solutions, we’re told.

Ford says the E-Transit Custom will be supported by Ford Pro software, charging, service and financing solutions via one comprehensive platform to help increase uptime and reduce operating costs.

The newest addition to Ford Pro’s electrified line-up will be a key component in Ford’s bold commitment to reach zero emissions for all Ford vehicle sales in Europe and carbon neutrality across its European footprint by 2035.
