Nearly 200 truck owners in Victoria have been overcharged by VicRoads to the tune of $860,000, through a TAC (Traffic Accident Commission) levy error that goes back to 1995.
VicRoads CEO John Merritt admitted to 3AW radio host Neil Mitchell yesterday (August 13) that the problem had existed since the introduction of the levy.
"We've found an error in the charging of the TAC levy in a small number of lightweight prime movers," he said.
"We've identified 194 registered owners where it looks like we've misclassified their vehicles for the purposes of the TAC levy."
Mr Merritt apologised for the bungle and said VicRoads was rectifying the issue as a matter of urgency.
"The system itself is not as clear as it should be, obviously the way in which we have trained our staff to differentiate between the prime movers has not been good enough and our audit system hasn't been good enough, so all of those things are being fixed now," he told Mr Mitchell.
VicRoads is now repaying the money to the affected truck owners, and says it's also investigating paying interest in some instances.
