The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 316 CDI and Vito 113 CDI vans have captured first place in their respective categories in the ‘CEP Van of the Year 2014’ awards.
The pair came up trumps over two exhaustive test routes in Germany, with the assessment criteria including functionality, driving comfort, handling, design and economy. A panel of 38 professionals from the courier, express, and postal sectors evaluated a total of 22 vehicles across four categories, covering more than 14,000km in the process.
The Vito outpaced its competitors in the up to three-tonne category – particularly impressing the judging panel with its drive system and safety features -- and the Sprinter won in the up to 3.5 tonne battle – its trump cards being safety, fuel efficiency and driving comfort.
At the awards ceremony, Matthias Hindemith, Head of Sales for Mercedes-Benz Vans Germany, said: "We are especially delighted to receive awards for which our customers serve as the judges. These awards demonstrate that our efforts in the areas of development, production, and service are being honoured."
This year was the 14th time the Stuttgart-based ETM publishing company has organised the CEP Van of the Year award.
In addition to the victories for the Sprinter and Vito, the innovation award for safety was won by the Crosswind Assist system, which is offered exclusively by Mercedes Benz.
Crosswind Assist claims to almost completely offset the effect of wind gusts. The system is based on the standard-fitted electronic stability program and is activated at speeds of 80km/h and above.
The Sprinter is equipped with Crosswind Assist as standard. Optional safety systems for the van include Blind Spot Assist, Highbeam Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.
