Volvo Truck Australia has announced that Volvo's new I-Shift Dual-Clutch transmission for heavy vehicles will soon reach Australia, with the high-tech system now available on FH models fitted with D13 engines in 500 and 540hp power ratings.
While the system is already available in some cars, Volvo Trucks says it’s the first manufacturer to offer dual-clutch technology in volume-production heavy commercial vehicles.

The system builds on Volvo's existing I-Shift intelligent automated manual transmission, and essentially sees two output shafts able to select two gears simultaneously, one being the active gear and the other being the next gear.
Volvo says that in real terms the system spells smoother gear shifts and smoother acceleration, without any loss of speed or power between gears. In turn, this means better traction on slippery surfaces, safer and more secure cargo for mobile loads such as liquids and livestock, and ultimately better fuel economy and reduced wear and tear.
The I-Shift Dual Clutch transmission is based on the standard I-Shift transmission, but the front half of the gearbox has been redesigned with new components, and is now 12cm longer.
According to Mitch Peden, Vice President Sales Volvo Trucks Australia, the new technology has much to offer for a wide spectrum of local customers.
"In situations that require a lot of gear changes, I-Shift Dual Clutch brings an entirely new dimension to truck driving," he said.
"I-Shift Dual Clutch allows seamless gear changes without any interruption to power or loss of speed, and delivers smooth acceleration when driving uphill, even on a slippery road.
"Ultimately it cuts wear on powertrain, tyres and the rest of the truck, while also saving on fuel as the engine disengages when going downhill.
"For trucks, this gearbox will truly make a major difference to driveability. The heavier the transport and the tougher the operating conditions, the more you will gain with I-Shift Dual Clutch. Power-shift gear changes, where there is no interruption in power delivery, means it is easier to keep up with traffic, especially on tricky stretches of roads. The result is more relaxed and safe driving."
