Volvo launches new FMX

The Swedish manufacturer recently showcased its rugged new construction specialist, the Volvo FMX

As part of the rollout of its next wave of trucks, Volvo recently unveiled its new FMX, with the construction trucks joining the new FH16, FH and FM ranges.

The new Volvo FMX features an entirely new cab, increased payloads and innovative new safety features, says Volvo.

The cab has a new front section with easily replaceable parts, plus headlight protectors, Volvo's new V-shaped LED headlights, and new anti-slip steps. There is now more room in the day cab plus up to 800 litres of storage, while drivers will benefit from improved vision thanks to a lowered door line and new rear-view mirrors, plus the option to add a camera to help eliminate the truck's near-side blind spot.

The updates continue with new interior colours, a new dash, and new instrumentation, the latter now with a 12-inch high-resolution instrument display with a user-friendly interface and a choice of four different screen views. A 9-inch side touchscreen, meanwhile, places infotainment, navigation and camera monitoring at the driver's fingertips.

For added confidence and control in tricky terrain, a new traction control panel allows the driver to quickly and easily engage differential locks as conditions demand, while a new steering wheel with a neck tilt option further improves driver comfort.

The new sleeper cab on the new Volvo FMX comes with improved storage possibilities, including a large storage compartment underneath the raised bed and an upper rear storage unit with LED panels in the compartment dividers. Cab insulation is improved, while the new, slimmer I-Shift gear selector means it's easier for the driver to move from behind the wheel to the bed.

Enhanced safety

On the safety front, the new Volvo FMX comes with optional Adaptive Cruise Control that operates down to a standstill, plus Descent Control to allow the driver to set the maximum speed on downhill grades. An EBS (Electronic Braking System) system is now standard, while Volvo Dynamic Steering, Lane Keeping Assist and Stability Assist are available as options. A new road sign recognition system is standard.

In Europe, the new Volvo FMX is available in a choice of six cabs: Day Cab, Low Day Cab, Low Sleeper Cab, Sleeper Cab, Globetrotter Cab, and Crew Cab. The range will be produced with a number of diesel engines with varying emissions standards, as required by various international markets.

When does the new Volvo FMX arrive in Australia?

While Volvo Group Australia is yet to confirm local specifications for Australia, it has indicated that production of the new models will commence in the first quarter of 2021.

"Our construction industry customers are facing ever-increasing demands to improve in areas such as sustainability, cost efficiency, safety and productivity," says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.

"With the launch of the new Volvo FMX, we are proving our commitment to supporting these customers by creating robust trucks and innovative services to assist in making their operations easier, safer and more profitable."
